A Halloween Tale

It was All Hallows Eve, also called Halloween

Where our story is set to begin.

When up from the ground, rose a monstrous hound

With evil red eyes and a grin.

All the children in sight, ran off in a fright

And their parents went running right after.

While the monster stayed back, and planned his attack

The night filling up with his laughter.

In this small town called Vale, were three boys and three pails

Their pails were filled up with great treats.

Then they heard a strange sound, and so turned around

And saw people were filling the streets.

Those people, afraid, were running one way,

So our three boys went running the other.

Toward the source of the noise ran our curious boys:

Two best friends, and a six year old brother.

The oldest was Cooper, dressed like a Storm Trooper

His friend Scott was dressed up like Darth Vader.

Though early that night, Scott’s helmet was tight

So he’d said that he might wear it later.

The youngest was Andy, who just wanted candy

Dressed up like the green power ranger.

Andy’s brother was Scott, but Scott swears that he’s not

Though he’d always protect him from danger.

The monstrous hound was still plotting, all the while flesh rotting

His foul stench filling the air.

As his plan was beginning, he couldn’t help grinning

So glad to be out of his lair.

As our three boys approached, he felt them encroach

And started to move their way.

The three boys then scattered, the monster was flattered

He loved to make children afraid.

As the boys were regrouping, the monster was swooping

Up and down every street

Searching for three young boys, making scarcely a noise

It was time for the real “trick or treat”.

Our three boys were hiding, the time they were biding

‘Till the monstrous hound was gone.

They’d taken some cover, Cooper, Scott and Scott’s brother

In a bush on Scott’s neighbor’s front lawn.

As time had gone past, Andy took of his mask

And started unwrapping a sweet

Scott looked through the leaves, and rolled up his sleeves

While Cooper was hugging his feet.

That’s when they decided, their plan was misguided

They wished they’d not run toward the noise.

But that’s what they got, Cooper, Andy and Scott.

Just because they were curious boys.

And so on that night, they decided to fight

Instead of just passing the blame.

That’s when they were found, by the monstrous hound

Who to their shock said “Let’s play a game”.

“It’s called Trick or Treat and before I repeat,

Know that there's no use in running,

Though you’re young and you’re fast, you’re greatly surpassed

In brute strength, age, wisdom and cunning.”

“I’m much smarter than you, and you’ll find that it’s true

When we get into playing my game.

And I just cannot wait, as it’s getting quite late

And I’ve only one night, it’s a shame.”

The boys were too scared, they just stood there and stared

At the big scary monstrous hound

Andy started to cry, so Scott said in reply

“I’m not scared of a four legged clown!”

These words had impressed them, Andy knew what possessed him

For he’d always known that Scott was brave.

So shoulder to shoulder, those young fake space soldiers

Hoped they’d not meet their early grave.

The monster replied after batting an eye

“I’m excited for us to begin.

So listen you fools, for here are the rules,

I’d like to be fair when I win.”

“Rule one is quite plain, if you have half a brain.

If you do, then it won’t be too hard.

And so as I was saying, while we are playing

We can’t leave Scott’s neighbors front yard.”

“Now as for rule two, we’ll have to eschew

The rest will just be a surprise

For we’re short on time, and it’s such a crime

That we only have ‘till sun-rise.”

The monstrous hound was amused, and the boys were confused

They had not really learned all the rules

They did not understand it, and it felt underhanded

That this monster had played them for fools.

And though it’s absurd, our boys undeterred

Agreed to the monstrous hounds’ game

Cooper, Andy and Scott knew that they knew squat

But decided to play all the same

Though as the game started, Scott quite loudly farted

The monstrous hound doubled over with glee

Though when it got to his nose, he ran out to the road

Laughing so hard that he peed

The game was now done, the monstrous hound broke rule one

But before he went home in defeat,

He said with a sneer, “I’ll be back next year

And we’ll really play Trick or Treat”.
