Spin Review Zine: Gorillaz - Demon Days VMP Edition (Photos, Reviews, Discussion, etc.)

Discussion

EDIT: This is a proper place to generally discuss the music as well. There's no way 20,000+ individuals preordered an album without having any appreciation for the music and don't have even a sentence to add about it! Even if you haven't received the album, feel free to comment on the songs, album as a whole, music videos, anything you remember about when the album first released - and then feel free to comment again once it arrives and share info about the pressing quality and your photos.

Hey, r/vinyl - The daily threads we attempted not too long ago didn't seem to attract much discussion - so here's an alternative weekly activity for the community. We'll pick a popular album and generate this all-encompassing webzine created by the community for discussing the music itself along with the pressing quality, sharing images from our collection, etc. When we post a new Spin Review Zine, we'll direct all posts concerning that specific record to this thread for one month after posting so that it's filled with plenty of info that can be used for reference in the future. We can also keep a running list of all the albums we've reviewed and discussed as a subreddit for easy access.

With shipments already arriving for the VMP pressing of Gorillaz Demon Days, we'd love for you to share your photos via Imgur link in the comments as well as any discussion of the music, quality of the pressing, or any other related comment you'd like to make concerning this album. Excited to see if you're all pleased with this release! Cheers.

Press Quality:

  • "...fantastic so far. The balance is fantastic and the bass is crisp." (/u/Karma-Policeman)

  • "It sounds really good [and clean]... I was expecting a bit thicker record but no real complaints..." (/u/lucastimmons)

  • "...best sounding version of the album I have heard. No distortion, no pops, no clicks... the bass is never overpowering. It's just as good as the 45RPM pressing of Panda Bear's Person Pitch. Highly recommended..." (/u/hundreds100)

  • ...sounds super good. [On] LP2 [I have] skips in 'All Alone' and 'Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head'. I can see what look like flaws in the grooves in both places that skip... (/u/bootbox)

Release Notes:

  • Seamless transitions that exist in other formats (including the OP pressing), i.e. Dirty harry to Feel Good Inc. and Don't Get Lost in Heaven to Demon Days, are instead a short blank gap on this release. - courtesy of u/SkyBlueShinx and u/Brazda25

  • Sleeves are a tight fit! "I normally keep mofi sleeves on all of my records, but one wouldn't even fit into the regular sleeve... now the regular sleeves are super tight to fit into the jacket even without the records in them" (/u/thelittledipster).

  • Here's a side by side comparison of the OG pressing to the VMP press courtesy of u/domdude.

Known Issues: Minor reports of scratches, pressing defects, etc. by u/REMAIN_IN_LIGHT, u/bootbox and u/itsmevin - though it seems contacting VMP has resulted in resolving these issues with replacements.

Demon Days is the second studio album by the British virtual band Gorillaz, released on 11 May 2005 in Japan and on 23 May internationally by Parlophone Records and in the United States by Virgin Records. The album features contributions from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde, Shaun Ryder, Dennis Hopper, the London Community Gospel Choir, and the Children's Choir of San Fernandez. Albarn brought in Danger Mouse as producer. The album has many lyrical themes centred on the destruction humans are causing worldwide; speaking about the track "Fire Coming out of the Monkey's Head", Albarn explained, "That came from a very naive idea, which is: what is going to happen when they've taken all of the oil out of the earth? Aren't there going to be these vast holes? Surely those holes shouldn't be empty. Surely there is a reason why they had all of this in. It's like bad plastic surgery, eventually it collapses." - Shameless Wikipedia
