All ZTKs require a great deal of luck, and almost always rely heavily on the opponent's actions such as drawing all five pieces of "Exodia" in the starting hand or during the opponent's first turn.

Game Terms:

  • Backrow: cards placed face-down in the Spell/Trap Card zones, so named because they are positioned behind the monsters on the Game Mat and serve as a line of defense against damage to them and your Life Points.

  • Brick(ing): an opening hand with poor synergy, such as a hand with a lot of high Level monsters, a hand with no monsters, or a hand with mismatched draw cards.

  • Burn Deck: Burn Decks are designed to "burn" the opponent's Life Points down to 0 with waves of cards that inflict Effect Damage. These Decks are usually slow as Burn Decks do not usually run many powerful monsters to defend directly.

  • Core: all the cards that are "required" for the deck. This always includes the "useful" archetype monsters, spells, and traps, but also can include cards from outside the archetype.

  • Dead Draw: a card that is unusable or not helpful at the time that it is drawn from the Deck or otherwise added to a player's hand.

  • Draw Engine: is a term referring to the way that a Duelist may draw cards from his/her Deck, to maintain hand advantage.

  • Engine: an engine is a combination of cards that work well together, but contains too few cards to make a full Deck. If an engine focuses on raising consistency, it is called a Draw Engine.

  • Farm: to duel a specific duelist multiple times using a specific deck guaranteed to obtain the best results).

  • Grind: to repeat the same action over and over again expecting specific results, i.e: obtaining more keys, rare cards, gems, gold, etc.

  • Hand Advantage: is the comparison of the number of cards in each player's hand, a player with more cards in their hand should have a greater chance of countering what their opponent plays, due to the larger pool of cards at their disposal. (Of course, a player actually has to use the cards for them to be effective, and that's usually going to reduce his or her hand size).

  • Lockdown: is where one player has either partial or complete control of the playing field, leaving the opponent with few options to come back, and win, if they even exist at all. This can be done by either preventing certain cards from being played, certain areas of the field from being accessed, or even trapping the opponent in a non-progressive loop, forcing them to go through the same set of predetermined motions without any way of breaking and/or countering the loop.

  • Meta [Metagame]: refers to the Deck(s) in current competitive use that are having the greatest success. Specifically, when players talk about the metagame (or 'meta', for short), they talk about which Deck styles and strategies are the most dominant in their area of play. Typically, as metagame Decks become more common, Anti-Meta Decks appear in order to counter them.

  • Mill(ing): sending cards from the top of a Deck to the Graveyard; "milling" the opponent's Deck can be done to thin out their resources or force them into losing via Deck out, however "milling" the player's own Deck is often done to use the effects of cards in the Graveyard.

  • Missing the Timing: Sometimes an optional effect can only be activated "when" a condition happens. In this case, you are only allowed to activate the effect when the activation condition being met was the last thing to happen in the game. If something else happened after the activation condition was met, then you have missed the timing.

  • Piercing Damage: Piercing battle damage is a card effect that allows battle damage to be dealt by a monster attacking a Defense Position monster. If the defending monster's DEF is lower than the attacking monster's ATK, the difference is inflicted as battle damage.

  • Stall(ing): to slow your opponent down and make it difficult to inflict damage or even to attack. Stalling is not a way to win by itself; it is usually used as a means to an end. Although it is most commonly used in the "special Exodia Event" Decks, it is also considered the only way to successfully play a Burn Deck.

  • Tech: often refers to a card whose purpose is supporting a deck with cards that help it run smoother, deal with cards that would counter the deck, or to combat specific deck builds often run in the current Metagame.

  • Top-Deck(ing): drawing a card when a player is at a large disadvantage and draws a card that ends up turning the tables in their favor.

  • Vanilla monster: a "Normal Monster Card".
