Using NVIDIA proprietary drivers with GNOME on Wayland is not supported yet in Ubuntu. See comment 2 at bug 1672033.

Comment 18 from that thread suggests that modifying /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf to change "options nvidia_381_drm modeset=0" to "options nvidia_381_drm modeset=1" should fix it, but that didn't seem to work for me.

In my case, version 381 of the driver doesn't appear to be available and I actually have 375, so maybe that somehow factors into it.

I'll play with it a little bit more.

edit: Grabbed the 381 drivers from https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa, and that didn't seem to do anything, either.

The launchpad bug references a gnome bugzilla bug report for the same issue. I added my experience to the gnome bugzilla report.

edit: Following all the steps listed in the bugzilla report at this point now enables me to use the Gnome on Wayland session

  • Modify "/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf" entry "options nvidia_381_drm modeset=0" to "options nvidia_381_drm modeset=1"
  • Run "sudo update-initramfs -u"
  • Reboot

The major caveat being that doing the above will break your Xorg login sessions.

Nevertheless, big thanks to jbicha and Igor Ingultsov for their help in getting it working!

In trying out the wayland session, I noticed one annoyance, and one dealbreaker issue:

  • gnome-terminal had big frame around the application, seemingly unrelated to its window decorations.
  • GL apps didn't seem to work, or at least not the couple of steam apps I tried
