What foods do the general public think are healthy, but in reality are not that healthy?

Every "diet" thing out there! Usually has the same amount of sugar as the original and waaaaay more carcinogenic.

That and yoghurt.

Haha, those diet fads do such a great job marketing their products as "healthy" too! Super deceptive.

Oh man, yogurt is bad for you? Even the organic ones?! I've been trying to eat healthier lately and I've been buying a bunch of organic whole milk greek yogurt. It's not cheap either!

Keep getting the Greek yogurt, but get the plain kind (no added flavorings, sugar, etc.), then add a touch of honey to it or some fruit. It's plenty sweet that way and you don't get a ton of refined sugars.

eugenosOP•

Yup, that's what we do! I add blueberries and bananas to mine. It makes it taste like a yummy dessert.

Yoghurt is okay in moderate amounts, it's just very bloating and can cause a buildup of (although healthy) fats, leading to at times, rapid weight gain. It seems there's nothing healthy! I went on a big weight loss scheme, lost around 60lbs, nothing is as healthy as you want it to be and unfortunately you have to stick to absolute basics. Nothing tasty (that can stay that way,) is ever "good" for you! Absolutely sucks! Good luck with your healthier eating!

Now grapes are healthy but need to be washed sooooo much because they have so much chemical sprayed on them.

I only buy organic grapes

I live in the south of France, in a middle of a vineyard. Multiple ones actually. There was 3 plants between my school and my home. In september with all use to eat grapes from the vine (and be late for school, or home back to school). The stuff was blue sometimes, from the chemicals.

(We're all fine, but looking back not very healthly)

Granola Bars.

I used to eat these all the time since they had "whole grains" and oats in them. The Nature Valley almond ones were my favorite. Then I realized that it's filled with tons of sugar and they are mainly made of refined carbs.

Vitamin Water

Sugar water with added vitamins. I used to drink the xxx flavor all the time because it had "acai" haha. Now my drink of choice is water or sparkling water.

Diet/sugar free drinks. They're basically just liquified chemicals, and they don't really help you lose weight.

5
eugenosOP•

Plus they taste gross! I never liked that diet aftertaste. I figure if I'm going to drink something unhealthy once in a while, I might as well enjoy it with the regular version.

Tilapia

Edit: And diet drinks

Whoa what's wrong with tilapia?

Wow, I did not realize this. Steamed tilapia is a pretty common dish in my culture.

What fish would you recommend? We're trying to eat more wild caught salmon and tuna, since I read that they are higher in omega 3s.

1
xmrvn•

Try to buy less bluefin tuna, since it is a endangered species due to immense fishing (mostly illegal because fishermen won't respect the catch limits states give - especially in Japan).

They deleted the comment... what exactly is wrong with it?

1

Most Tilapia is farmed. Fed shitty grain-based food that results in fish without all the healthy stuff that wild fish have.

1
smer85•

Not to mention, most of the fish food used in farming is produced by slave labor in Asia. Just another reason to go with wild caught.

I fucking hate when people tell me that drinking a diet drink is so bad for me, because yeah, it's bad, but I'm diabetic so it's not nearly as bad as drinking a regular soda would be for me.

I realize that and never said otherwise.

That's just you, though. Speaking in general, like I believe OP was with this question, diet drinks are about the same in regards to how "good" they are for people as regular soft drinks.

lol, I'm not sure being yucky makes them unhealthy. Maybe the tons of salad dressing they drizzle all over the salad? When I order salad, I always get the dressing on the side and truthfully never finish the full amount they give me.

"What foods do people find delicious, but in reality aren't that delicious?" wasn't the question.

A lot of times, salads you order from restaurants (or worse, fast food places) will have toppings and dressing that are loaded with fat or sugar. It's insane how many calories a fast food salad can have.

Muffins are literally the same as cupcakes.

3
eugenosOP•

Ughhh sweet foods are my kryptonite. Blueberry muffins used to be one of my favorite breakfast items. But yeah, I agree, tons of sugar in them.

2
Jlpanda•

Does anyone actually think muffins are healthy though?

2
KyloWylo•

Too much fruit can be a bad thing

2
r24alex3•

Frozen yogurt. It's basically ice cream and it's worse if you drown it in toppings.

Sadly, water.

1
eugenosOP•

Haha speaking of water, I tried the stupidest human experiment last week. I came across a bunch of articles about 3 day water only fasts. To keep a long story short, I threw up a bunch of yellow/green bile because I was starving myself and because I had an electrolyte imbalance (at least that's what my doctor theorized after I told her after the fact).

uncle_monty•

Muesli is incredibly calorie dense.

1
CherryLeigh86•

Calories aren't unhealthy though if it comes from non sugary or fatty stuff. Calories are needed you know: p

Cow's milk.

Hummus.

0
eugenosOP•

What's wrong with hummus? I buy the ones from Trader Joes and the ingredients seem pretty simple and healthy.

1

I think it's sposed to be kinda fatty.

1
tryallthescience•

Nope, hummus is actually a low-calorie food. Per tablespoon it has 25 calories and less than 2 grams of fat, on average.

Edit: not sure why I put an ingredient of hummus instead of the word hummus.

1

I must be buying the wrong hummus, then.

2
tryallthescience•

Actually you're good on that- hummus is low-fat, low-calorie, has no sugar and has a lot of fiber. Eat up!
