Arsène Wenger is frustrated by the lack of public support that he has received from Arsenal during his side’s struggles this season.
The club released a statement from chairman Sir Chips Keswick last month acknowledging that they “understood the debate” about Wenger’s future but it stopped short of endorsing the manager of 21 years, insisting only that a decision about a new deal “will be made by us mutually and communicated at the right time in the right way”.
Wenger has told Arsenal that he is ready to sign the new two-year contract that has been on the table for him since last summer, but the club are wary of a backlash from fans and want him to wait until the end of the season.
Despite his public claims to the contrary, Wenger fears that the constant speculation over his future has begun to unsettle his players, who have lost three of their past six Premier League matches to slip to sixth in the table, seven points off the Champions League places.
Wenger believes that Arsenal could have done more to support him, particularly as he has made it clear that he wants to carry on next season, even if they fail to secure a top-four spot for the first time under his stewardship.
The Frenchman is understood to have been unimpressed by last month’s statement and believes it would have carried more weight had it come from Stan Kroenke, the majority shareholder, or Ivan Gazidis, the chief executive.
There is also tension behind the scenes between Wenger and Gazidis over plans to restructure Arsenal’s football department. Gazidis has always been a strong supporter of Wenger’s but wants to make changes with a view to planning for his departure, including the appointment of a sporting director to oversee the club’s transfer policy.
Dick Law, Arsenal’s chief transfer negotiator, is expected to leave at the end of next season, with Gazidis keen to bring in another expert to work with him in the interim and eventually succeed him. Wenger is resistant to such changes and was annoyed by Gazidis’s announcement at a fans’ group meeting this month that there would be huge changes this summer.
Wenger has admitted that he has not yet spoken to Jack Wilshere since he suffered his latest injury setback and the Arsenal midfielder will start his initial recovery at Bournemouth, where he has been on loan this season.
Wenger has admitted that he has not yet spoken to Wilshere since he suffered his latest injury setback VICTORIA JONES/PA Wilshere, who will enter the final year of his contract in July, suffered a hairline fracture in his left leg when he was accidentally kicked by Harry Kane, the Tottenham Hotspur striker, during Bournemouth’s 4-0 defeat last Saturday. A similar problem ruled out Wilshere for most of the 2015-16 season.
Wenger said that he was “sad” when he heard the news of the injury but asked whether he had spoken to his player, he said: “Not recently. I’ve followed the situation closely because he sees a specialist. We think it’s a simple fracture that doesn’t need surgery. Hopefully he will be back in July for training.”
Hairline fractures usually take six weeks to heal. Wilshere is expected to visit Arsenal next week but the club’s medical staff have spoken to their Bournemouth counterparts about whether the player will stay on the south coast. “We have a good understanding with the medical staff,” Wenger said. “The rehab will be done here because the season will be over.”
Wenger said that his decision has been justified to send Wilshere on loan to prove his fitness and play regular football. He has made 27 league appearances with 22 starts — more league games than he has played in any season at Arsenal.
Arsenal have had tentative talks about extending Wilshere’s deal — but the club could be doing so to protect his value. They have seven players with a year left on their deal and Wenger said contract talks with some will take place in the summer.
I've been saying it for a while now - the problems are down to the Board. It seems clear to me that they are torn between supporting Arsene Wenger and listening to the fans. They lack the ability to make a decision so they keep deferring. And by delaying the decision, they put in jeopardy all kinds of other decisions regarding new hires, new signings, and contract negotiations.
If you want him, keep him and tell the fans to deal with it. If you don't, then tell Wenger that and announce it to get the players and fans behind him for the cup run.
Or third option, tell Wenger you want to keep him but his failure this year is unacceptable so they are changing the hierarchy - he can accept the new order or leave. Come up with a plan and a deadline and get everything squared away. It is nearly May and we have no idea who the manager will be, if we will or won't have a director of football, and therefore none of the players or agents know what to do either. Its disgraceful leadership from the Board.
The problem is everywhere. This club has had rot in it for too long and now it's spread all over the place. The players don't look like they play for the manager anymore. Wenger looks like has to be put out of his misery because he is not going to admit he has failed and the board is the fucking board and the owner doesn't give a shit about the club.
Maybe it started with the board who knows but now the problem is all over the club
This is a good post. Doesn't really matter who started it anymore to be honest, just matters that it changes and unfortunately I cannot envision a way that it changes without Wenger leaving.
If he stays, regardless of any investment in the club, as soon as things go awry next season, the environment will take a nose dive.
