Public library staff, talk to me about your music collections.
I'm the selector for the music collection as a medium-large system (10 buildings, ~150k patrons), and I'm starting to change how I view music: I'm going from active selection to end of life care for the collection. Over the last five years, our circ stats for music have dropped 33%. If this trend stays consistent with the RIAA's statistics on sales and market share, we may be looking at the end of the physical collection in the next decade or so. I'd love to go to MLA at some point but I live on the east coast and the likelihood of shipping me off to Portland next year is preeeeetty slim. I don't know any other music selectors, so I'm trying to reach out to whomever and wherever I can.
SO! I want to hear about your libraries and what you're currently doing with your music collections. Are you just leaving it alone? How does it circ? Have you stopped buying music altogether and are focusing solely on streaming? Do you have music CDs at all? What's the weeding situation like? How's the selection? How's the budget doing? Have you centralized your music to one branch? Does it float? Do you have a local music collection? If you do, how's it doing?
Basically, tell me whatever you want or know about your music collections! I'd love to have a dialogue about this--I've heard from staff within my system, but I want to hear from other parts of the country/world/anywhere, really.
