When TTG and Reality Painfully Collide
Taking a programming class as a requirement for my major, and our final project was the fairly normal "Show what you learned in class" type.
Being the lazy type, I decided "Hey, why not make something I can actually use for my players?" So of course, I wrote up a basic character generator; core classes and races only, no skills or feats yet.
It was easy, it was fun for me, and it'd be something I could continue to work on later. I knew the risks, but hoped against hope that it wouldn't happen; programming is a fairly "nerdy" sort of field, so surely I'm not the only one here?
Tried the kinda probing "By show of hands, how many here have heard of Dungeons and Dragons?"
Two hands in the back. That's it.
I then got to stand in front of the other 26 people in the room who had no idea what I was talking about and give a presentation about my nerd boardgame.
So, friendos, what're your stories of times when your TTG hobby came up in a normal setting and things turned out less than awesome?
