Where to get a classic beetle for cheap in NJ?

So I'm a high school student in north NJ, and I'm willing to go to bordering states or in state to find a classic beetle that is less than $1000 and runs. It's not a daily driver, that's what my jetta is for. This is something I can fix up on weekends and make nice. I'm not looking to make any serious mechanical fixes, which is why I want one that will run and drive. I'm only really willing to fix it and restore it in terms of visual stuff like panels and interior and stereo and stuff like that. Under $1000 is really preferable because I'm not Rockefeller. Where should I look? I tried Craigslist and eBay and came up empty. Any gold mines I don't know of? Is there some website that has a lot of these? Should I go to some sort of junkyard?
