Should I try to catch up with old friend?

So long story short im in high school and went up to this chinese girl named yin and I tried to ask her out using a pick up line a girl used on me which was "Oh hey you're [ethnicity] do you know [language] you should tutor me" now when I used this on yin it backed fired because she was actually a student teacher/TA that wanted to learn how to teach chinese and because of my horrible flirting skills I ended up learning chinese and we became friends and I think she liked me at one point but it might have been complicated if we did go out then after a month or two of our tutoring sessions she couldn't come anymore because her grandfather got hurt in china and her dad went over to visit and stay so she didn't have a ride anymore and I tried keeping in contact with her and stuff but it was pretty complicated because she didn't have alot of hobbies and im bad at making conversation out of the blue because I didn't have alot of hobbies either so it was pretty hard to talk about stuff so then like 6 months pass of us not talking and then I finally remember her again and im wondering whether or not to text her because I tried getting her attention in the hallway twice but I think she was subconsciously walking so she didn't notice me so I'm hesitant to text her because im not sure if she remembers me or if I look like a asshole for wanting to try to talk to her out of the blue after such a long time
