Ex assaulted me, has decided to settle out of court....
So, my(27F) ex (45M) raped me multiple times over a three month period before he broke up with me for cancelling a date because I had the flu. Dumbest reason ever, whatever, but I wasn't upset. I had already come to the realization the nice kind man during the day didn't see me as a person, just an object for his personal use at night. I am healing/recovering mentally pretty well. It might hit in a few months, years, decades, but for now, I'm doing pretty well.
Well, after we broke up he started doing some pretty crazy stalking/harassing. Showing up at my home and my folk's homes trying to force me to talk to him. Basically that part was far worse than the assault. The constant anxiety was much worse for me.
Well, I sought legal counsel and as soon as my ex caught wind I am considering filling rape charges and pursuing a possible civil suit, he has finally stopped harassing me and wants to do an out of court settlement so his name doesn't get dragged through the mud.
He, or his lawyer, suggested a large sum of money. More than I would make in the next 10 years and I am unsure what to do to protect it/make sure it lasts as long as possible. So, estate planning lawyers of reddit, what would you suggest? My research is leading me towards an irrevocable trust (so he pays the taxes on the deposited money) with me as the sole beneficiary and trustee. And then pay myself. Part of the settlement is a townhouse, so ideally the trust will own that as well and I will pay rent as well as a roommate, so that will be income to the trust as well as investment income.
Thoughts? If your 27 year old daughter suddenly had a large sum of money dropped in her lap for something horrible, how would you recommend protecting the longevity of that money so some good can come out of something horrible?
Edit: Sorry, forgot to include my location, USA, or more specifically Texas.
