Curious about chemex filters

I just noticed that some chemex filters are folded in such a way that one side of the "filter cone" has 2 layers while the other has only 1. I also hear in instructional vids that the double layered side of the filter must be on the side of the chemex where coffee pours out. Wont the uneven thickness of the filter cone affect extraction?
