Why do mafs go after the ones town is sus about?

For instance I was Jest and D2 town was halfway to lynching me, so N2 maf kills me. Why? They know I'm not maf so any attention that's not on them should be good. This happens all the time. If you do this tell me why, what kind of strategy is this?
