[VA] Landlord letting apartment fall apart, wants to renovate and rent for more money when I leave.

I moved into an apartment in a co-op in Arlington, VA in September. Shortly after I moved, the apartment was purchased by an investor but my lease was still valid. The apartment is in fairly good condition, other than the cabinets. The cabinets are 20 years old and falling apart, literally crumbling into my food, utensils, and tubberware that I store in the cabinets.

I brought this to my landlords attention via email, and he responded that he plans to re-do the cabinets, flooring, and make other improvements after my lease ends. I assume he is planning on renovating the apartment and renting it out for much more money. I want the apartment to be in good shape while I live there. Do I have any legal protections?
