Where do people get the idea that ellipses (…) should be used absolutely everywhere?
I saw this menu at a restaurant the other day, and I could hardly believe it.
Meat Lasagna..........If you are ravenous......................... try the
lasagna.........layered high with sausage, beef, ricotta, marinara,
mozzarella, and parmesan cheese,..........................................
homemade and packed with our finest ingredients...........$16.99
Sure, a row of dots makes for a good leader, and there are some of those here. Besides that, an ellipsis is generally used for omission in a quotation, or to show a longer-than-usual pause in cadence, or trailing off in confusion or uncertainty. None of that even remotely applies here.
This isn't the first time—[found this on r/oldpeoplefacebook](http://imgur.com/a/CElWC), for instance—that I've seen writing from someone who seems to think that a row of dots is the ideal way to punctuate every sentence or reasonably long phrase. What ungodly force possesses people to think that this is how it ought to be? Who taught them that this is okay?
