Balmy Alley safe?

Hey all,

Wanted to know if the area is safe enough to visit? Seems to me that based off certain posts that certain streets between Balmy and Mission (esp. Capp and Shotwell) have a less than stellar reputation but others say it's fine, so wanted to get the real story on the area. Murals look really interesting so would like to check it out.
