Why did Sauron care so much about the ring?

It was stated by Tolkien that Sauron's power was not diminished without the ring in his possession. It's also been speculated that he never even conceived that someone would want to destroy it. Was Sauron solely concerned that the ring might be used against him? Even though it was his power and he would presumably still have control over it.
