An activists plea for a Google Docs alternative
Hey all, like many after the 2016 election I decided to wipe the Cheeto dust off my hands, crawl out if my basement and brave the sunlight to spread the good word.
I have found myself attending cryptoparties, joining political organizations and networking with activists. We always give them the starter advice of: use Signal, use random passwords with a password manager, and encrypt everything. But when I ask what tools they use most to collaborate they almost invariably say Google Docs.
I am sure we all know the risks that political groups like Democratic Socialists of America, and immigration groups like Make the Road take by storing addresses, emails, phone numbers, and meeting notes of activists and undocumented folks in Google Docs. And they do too. They want an alternative and as far as I can tell there is none.
There are some options like Ethercalc, or Etherpad, and more; but none that come close to a Word/Calendar/Spreadsheet/Email suite that does not require technical know how and set up. We have more encrypted message options then (insert clever simile here that will make you like me).
Is there an alternative for Google Docs that could meet the the threat model of political opposition groups and immigration activists in the US? If not is there one in the works? And can we stop circle jerking about messaging apps?
