How were drug addicts treated in cultures where trips were considered to be spiritual journeys?
In light of the discovery of two ancient solid gold bongs, I got to wondering if addicts were treated like the Oracle at Delphi (not well, I hear, but specifics I've heard are probably not accurate, like were they all pretty girls and raped constantly), or like they couldn't handle spirituality, or if they were sited by God, or too sensitive to the spirit realm, or posessed, or what.
I'd be slightly more interested in Mayan / first people's kind of stuff, since their spirit journeys are in pop culture.
