Is this the right way to learn?

I've been wanting to learn programming for sometime now. Not knowing where to start I've downloaded a few books and bought and introduction to Python.

But part of me feels this is jumping too far ahead based on my limited knowledge. So this past weekend i joined Codeacademy and have since started with basic Html and hope to work my way up to more advanced languages. Is this a good path to take or do any of you have better suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
