Small pantry advice - closet shelves or cabinetry w/drawers? (x-post from r/interiordesign)

Hope this is an OK subreddit to ask this question.

So, our kitchen doesn't currently have a pantry. With our remodel, we will be adding a small pantry around the corner. The architect's plans (picture here - pantry is around the corner from the peninsula) currently have it as a small closet - only about 4 feet wide by 2 feet deep. So definitely not walk-in. I'm assuming the thought is we would put shelving in there.

I'm curious about using IKEA high cabinets with drawers instead of a closet similar to this. Drawers seem like they would be more ergonomic than reaching in, but I'm concerned whether drawers would work long-term with heavy pantry items (like canned goods). I'm also sure cabinetry is more expensive, though we'd be getting a good deal with IKEA.

I've never really had a pantry growing up (always small kitchens), and my wife grew up with a basement shelf pantry, though she didn't really cook that often. Any thoughts from people who actually use a pantry?
