Labrum tear.. what's best next?
I'm a 21 year old female who's relatively healthy. I've had shoulder pain and muscle spasms for a week. I finally saw my PCP who sent me to ortho.
I met with a shoulder surgeon today in Philly, The Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center. He did X-days, which were normal as expected. I was extremely weak in internal/external rotation. I can raise my arm up all the way but, there is a popping catching sensation. He said his guess is, he's about 90% sure I have a labrum tear. My options were PT and wait and see or MRI with contrast injected into the joint.
I told him I don't do needles. I have more anxiety about those than I do about the OR room. He kind of chuckled and said well let's try the PT 2-3x weekly. If I improve, it's great. If not, we can do an MRI without the contrast. It may or may not be perfectly clear. I'm currently not allowed to lift anything more than 5lbs.
If I have a cyst, he recommends surgery. No cyst, I have options, surgery or PT.
My questions:
- How clear/unclear will the MRI be without the contrast? Am I significantly screwing things up without the dye?
- Regardless of cyst or no cyst, is surgery the better option just due to my age?
