I'm a moron. A confession.

Bought a new nagaoka mp110 about a month ago. Broke it in. Month later thought it still sounded like shit. I listened to a LOT of records during this month. Turns out one of the tiny bolts and nut holding the cartridge on was completely loose- I just put it on without tightening at all. Made sure both sides were tight and was instantly transported to sonic heaven.
