TBM racism in the South
My niece (nevermo born to an inactive Mormon) just posted on Facebook that she's upset New Orleans has decided to get rid of Confederate monuments. The one just taken down wasn't even Confederate--it was a monument to a vigilante group that attacked the interracial police force because the police in N.O. had dared to put blacks on staff several years after the Civil War. But the city does plan to take down others celebrating Robert E. Lee and other heroes of the Confederacy. It's one thing to believe these statues and monuments belong in a museum as part of the city's history. It's another thing to think they should still be on public property and celebrated. My TBM aunt, a former Relief Society president, was the first to "Like" my niece's lament about removing racist monuments. Racism in the South, even among TBMs, is still pretty rampant. I don't interact with any of my family on Facebook, but I haven't blocked them, so I still see what they say.
