I'd mainly apply this to people with criminal records or mental health problems. the fact that countries have supreme courts means we already acknowledge there are some circumstances where we acknowledge the general population can't be trusted with a decision. it seem absurd to me that we think the general population can't be trusted to make the right choice about gay marriage's legality, but they're given free range on picking who gets to flick the nuclear switch. there should be someone who can say "sorry you have alzheimer's you don't get to be president"
