someone defamed me on twitter with some extreme slanders. what to do? (details inside)

hi! someone defamed me on twitter with some extreme slanders during legitimate political debate. i delete the tweet with the opinion that made him went psycho, but his tweet with my name tagged in it is still there. i report to twitter about his tweet in order they remove it, and recived mail that they are checking it. meanwhile my friends and family can see the tweet and this make me huge embarrassment. moreover, the discussion started from politician tweet, and his name tagged in all the tweets of this discussion include those that defamed me, so this discussion can be showed in the followers of this politicians twitter feed. what can i do in this subject? there is way to block him from tag me in tweet? can i turn to twitter in some another ways? maybe i can treat to sue him if he is not remove is tweet? it's really bothers me. p.s. sorry about the imperfection of my english.
