[Rant/Vent, support, advice] I'm getting tired of my Nparents fake sympathy, and I don't know what to do
Hi everyone, this is my first time posting, but after reading some of the definitions and stories here, I am certain that my parents are Narcs. Also, apologies about the tagging if it's incorrect, as well as the post being rather long, I just need to get this off my chest.
Earlier today, I received news that my grandfather (who has been in and out of hospital for a few years, and recently went back due to his health declining) has taken a turn for the worse, and my Nparents said (something along the lines of) "if we get a call later tonight, assume/ prepare for the worst." I'm grateful that they made me aware, as my sisters are aware, however, neither of them have spoken to him in a few years (due to some events that lead to many arguments) and I honestly think they don't care. The way they told me, where I was demanded to sit down by my Ndad, and the way my Nmother used a very light, pitying tone of voice (it's difficult for me to describe, but if anyone's been in a situation where someone doesn't care about them, but then suddenly acts like they do and uses a tone of voice to reflect sympathy, even though it's obvious they don't care, it's that tone of voice I'm trying to describe.) It just feels so fake.
After they informed me, I went to the toilet and as I returned, I heard my Nmother on the phone, and she said "some days he's doing great, other days he's in the pits of hell." And when she hung up a few minutes later, it was my Ndad's boss, and my Ndad hasn't been to work in a while, because on the 1st March, I was going to an event with a friend and he was supposed to get money for me to get the train, but he left to get money and didn't return for 10 hours (from what I was told by my Nmother.) I found out the next day that he had gone missing for all that time because he was going to commit suicide. I saw him and informed him of a charity that he could use if he was feeling down and wanted to chat, but I don't think he's used it at all, and since then, he's basically staying up all night watching Netflix, going to bed in the morning and waking up in the afternoon, and I want to try and help him, but I don't even think he'll help himself. I have thought about using the advice/ tactics he's used toward me (which was "sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and get on with it. I don't like my job, but sometimes the best part about it looking at other jobs at the end of the day." -- Please note, when he says he dislikes his job and looks at other jobs, he doesn't apply for them, he just stays where he is and where he's clearly miserable, and he's been in this job for years and he didn't leave it, even though he's disliked it for a long time.) If I use his advice/ tactics, I get a strong impression that it would backfire and do more harm than good, but I've already tried being sympathetic, and I don't think he'd help himself either if I tried again and I'm not really sure what to do.
I like helping people, if I can, because there's so much misery in the world, and I want to try and help people so they feel better, even if it's just by doing something small. With my Nparents, though, even they won't help themselves. They accept each other's sympathy, and seem to lap it up like a dog with water, but it looks so fake to me, and with everything going on, I feel guilty and I don't know what to do, anymore.
