Have polls always been news?

It seems to me that polls, political or otherwise, have become news items in themselves. I don't understand why polls have boomed in importance and wonder if this is a recent thing, a natural consequence of social media or something else.

Am I wrong in thinking polls' importance is overstated or should they be respected?
