Obese, with a Perfectly Healthy Second Pregnancy! And yet...
So, to begin, I'm considered obese (I hate that word, but it's the word used, so I'll use it) and I got pregnant within a week of trying and had a perfectly healthy first pregnancy: perfect blood pressure, no gestational diabetes, no preclampsia, no blood clots, went into labor (10 days late but) naturally. I want to stress that I'm not saying this to brag or be insensitive, but just to dispel typical obesity related stereotypes about pregnancy. I had none of them.
The one thing that did happen, was that I ended up needing an "emergency" c-section because the baby's position was "nose first." Not to be confused with sunny side up, my baby was literally trying to push herself out face first and her nose was poking outside my uterus. There wasn't any way to adjust her position, so a c-section was deemed necessary. This had nothing to do with my weight and was not a weight related complication, she just happened to be coming out the wrong way. I was told after the c-section that the way it was performed and sutured would be the best possible option for a future VBAC, should I choose to do so.
Fast forward to my now second, perfectly healthy pregnancy. Same circumstances as last time, got pregnant fast and have had zero complications or issues thus far (I'm 34 weeks along right now). I've explained many times to my doctor this round that I plan on laboring and birthing naturally, unless something happens that will require a c-section or induction, and I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Here's what happened at my last appointment that sent me into a murderous rage: My doctor says that they've now got this niffty new tool that calculates a patients chance of success with natural birth based on a few criteria. The second she brought it up, I instantly knew that this would not work out in my favor. She entered my BMI, my age, answered "no" to a few questions that didn't apply to me (I think they were like, was I African American and did I have epilepsy?), and put "yes" for whether I'd had a prior c-section. Shockingly I got a success rate of 33% and, just as shockingly, they want you to have at least a 60% success rate for them to feel comfortable with allowing me "a trial of labor." I was out of my mind with frustrated rage and it was all I could do to politely tell my doctor that I understand the risks, but until something happens to indicate that I need an induction/scheduled c-section, my plan is to labor naturally and not to tell her where she could stick her damn calculator.
I'm still so pissed that I don't even know how to rant appropriately about it, but I just so sick and tired of disproving obese pregnancy stereotypes over and over and over again and still having them tell me that it would be much safer for me to XYZ because of all the complications I could encounter based on statistical data. I think this calculator is bunch of fucking bullshit and is just another excuse to bully women into getting c-sections that might not even be necessary. I should be treated as an individual and my pregnancy should be treated as it's own, unique event, not as statistics and odds all of which I've beaten so far!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
