New (old) bass I picked up. Any recommendations of what I should do with the finish?

Picked up this bass in a trade. http://imgur.com/a/P9IX6 It sounds pretty decent and all the pots and switches seem to be working. I have to push my amp pretty hard to get the same gain level as I do from my other basses and I'm assuming it has to do with the pick-ups being old/worn.

Is it worth replacing or rewinding the pickups? Also, is it worth refinishing or should I just leave it all original?
