Coming from both sides of adoption
Hi, I don't post often, but I was wondering if anyone else could offer some insight to my situation.
My father, who has passed away, was adopted at birth. He did not want to find his birth family, as he felt that they'd rejected him. I've always wondered where we come from, etc. but had always respected his feelings.
However, at 22 years old, I gave a son up for adoption. It remains, to this day, this most difficult and life changing experience of my life. I don't think that I've really dealt with my feelings regarding any of this, honestly. I have contact with my son due to an open adoption, and we have a great relationship in more of an older sister capacity. He's aware that I'm his birth mom, and it's never phased him. I feel so blessed to be able to have that contact and relationship while watching him grow up with parents that have given him far more than I ever could have. They are amazing people.
However, after watching a show about family reuniting, I cannot stop thinking about finding my dad's birth family. About a month and a half ago, I sent away for the DNA test and am waiting on my results. I have VERY limited information about his birth/infancy, and have no access to get any other information.
The emotions that I'm dealing with now are overwhelming. I'm so confused about wanting to meet and know about people that have no idea I exist, but are genetically my family. How can this be so important to me? I wonder if she really didn't want my dad, and he was warning me not to go looking in order to spare my feelings. I'm afraid that he would have been angry with me for looking. I'm afraid I'm too late in my searching and my dad's biological mom/dad will have passed away, and I'll never know anything. I'm really confused about this missing part of me that I didn't know was there until recently. I see these amazing reunions, and while I know not everyone has that kind of experience, but it doesn't stop me from wanting that moment of looking at someone's face and seeing eyes that look like mine, or the same dimples I have.
Has anyone gone through anything similar?
