Can Exchange be used just for calendar and contact sharing?

Email is hosted elsewhere and we want to keep it that way but we are currently unable to share calendars and contacts easily the way we have it. Can we use Exchange just for calendar and contacts or do we have to go the full way and manage our email that way too?
