How late is too late (for ceremony and dinner)?

My venue booked a daytime event and won't let us start our ceremony until 8 pm. Cocktails would be 8:30-9:30 and then dinner would start at 9:30. I'm so upset because it feels like we're being crammed in as an afterthought. To be clear, this is totally my fault and was a misunderstanding on my part. This is in NYC so late dinners are a thing, but this is way too late, right?
