Hello! I am flying to Seattle, WA in June. I want to make it to Vancouver area for a week and get a feel for the people without spending much. Any advice?

30s male going alone. Decently hairy, hard worker. My crazy idea is to find a new friend going to Canada and carpool and buy some lunches/dinner. Or the ferry? I'm not a big touristy sites kind of guy. I like meeting people of the land and want to get to know the true Canadian lifestyle. What do people that live in the area do for fun? Thank you!
