Does anyone else miss Sale of the Century?

no politics

I think it was genuinely a source of information and knowledge, but I feel like most of Australia doesn't value that anymore.

Also I am sorry for last nights post of "what phone do you all use?" I was drunk and being a dickhead.

Yeah I miss it.. Reminds me of sitting in with the family on weeknights and yelling at the TV..

But think the chase has filled the void you mention somewhat.. love general knowledge quizzes so the speed of questioning makes it a good binge in the allotted hour..

Somewhat related is remembering a pisstake of SOTC done by one of the old comedy shows (could've been full frontal) where Tony Barber is backflipping as part of his entrance...

Still makes me laugh..

Qtard•

So many of the 'quiz' shows are dull quasi-reality shows that are more interested in manufacturing rags-to-riches dramatic moments for battlers than celebrating knowledge (and they somehow managed to find a way to ask even fewer questions and fill in more crap than How to be a Millionaire on that awful Hot Seat show).

While The Chase is also a little bit guilty of this, it's still the closest thing to a pure quiz show like Sale / Temptation that remains. It's a shame that the strategy element of it is predictable and not tempting enough to make the game element of it more interesting.

DontJealousMe•

I personally think "The Chase" is a shocking game show. The contestants have it too hard, then they give the chaser easier questions.

8
mulimulix•

British game shows are just much harder for the contestants to actually win. Whether it's The Chase, Eggheads, Pointless, they just all seem sooo hard to actually win and when they do they only win a couple of thousand pounds. I like the concept of The Chase and still watch it but it certainly is one of the harder ones in Australia.

8
Mr_A•

The only thing good about The Chase Australia is how quickly the questions come in the two minute rounds. Everything else can be skipped.

This is the best game to come out of the UK. Carrot in a Box!

3
djsinnema•

Yeah it feels like it is alot less lucrative, especially compared to millionaire hot seat. The highlights of the show are when they have the British chasers, The Beast and Governess. if you want to see frosty knickers in a different light this is her on BBC1 radio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2DkMSoLujA

There are two envelopes full of questions and the team gets to pick one.

Still unsurpassed, unfortunately.

This has been a Grunnnnndy television production for the Niiiiine Network Australia. Petesmithspeaking

I was on it. It was terrible. My score went down to zero in like fifteen seconds. The question would go "What bri-" and the guy next to me would be on the buzzer saying "Sydney Harbour' and getting it right. And Red Symons was really rude to me in the make up room - and I'm not sure if he was acting or not.

14
Jcit878•

keep the stories coming. this is fascinating. what was tony barber like?

vic1000•

It was Glenn and I forget the sidekick but she was cute. I waited all day to get on, in fact I think I went in two other days and wasn't picked.

There was an initial quiz in the Toorak church hall where you were chucked out if you didn't get 45 out of 50 or similar, then the PA interviewed you to see if you were suitable.

My instructions were very clear, my family had told me to 'buy' everything that was offered - there were mini-games where you could buy a chance to win and somehow I got onto one of them by answering a special question correctly. All I ended up with was the pen. But we did get to watch me on TV and my wife thought I never looked better (with all the pancake makeup). Unfortunately my son was only about a year old and he doesn't realize what an epic event it was.

For the next six months at work though the occasional person would stop me and say they had seen it.

Sounds like the dear old lady who used to babysit me when I was a kid. I distinctly remembered she got onto the show one night and had much the same experience, I think she only ever got to answer one question. The last fame game question.

She picked the $25. Lost when the defending champ got the last question right as the buzzer went.

My Uncle was on the show in the early 90's. He won the first night, but lost the second. Ended up with a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Whenever I see someone driving an Alfa Romeo, my shit brain automatically assumes they won it on Sale of the Century.

13
tragggic•

I loved that show. It's depressing how far game shows have been dumbed down.

Jeopardy is a good substitute. Actual tough questions that will make you realise how little you know about English royalty, the classics and Greek gods

Also jeopardy. Can't beat it if you need your daily quiz show. There is a very nice person on r/jeopardy who uploads the daily episode for people.

I watched eggheads today and it made me search for SOTC, good spot!

And his entry.

I remember him running in for the first episode. I think I was in year 5, so 1979??

Asked my mates at school on the Tuesday if they'd seen it. Spend 15 mins explaining it to them.

The format comes and goes though, there was temptation and million dollar minute which were essentially the same thing.

When I was a kid my grandparents were fairly doting and let my sister and I get away with a lot. Right up until Sale went on and then heaven help you if you interrupted for anything short of major bleeding or broken bones.

When I was very little (pre memory or vcr but there is a photo somewhere of the tv) my Dad was on it. From what I heard in the family lore (too young to remember myself) they were blown away impressed with.

3
Jcit878•

as a kid i had an early bedtime. half of memories are of hearing the muffled theme song through walls everynight. i used to think it was a superhero show or something (the theme is quite heroic sounding and the booming "saaaaaaaalle of the century' is pretty epic. i thought it was adult He Man for years

3
Kermit-Batman•

I could be wrong, wasn't it on at 5:00, 5:30 pm? Not having a go at you of course, just thinking geez, that is an early bedtime! I remember watching the first episode of The Simpsons broadcast in Australia, that came on after Family Feud, which all I can remember is the hosts perm and the buzzer.

I'm pretty sure it started with Bart the genius, and was around 91 or 92, either way, I was five or six, it's funny what we remember!

1
Jcit878•

i think it was 7pm, well it was for a while anyway. it may have been moved later on. and LOL at the family fued host haha! i used to assiciate hair like that with ch7 and one of my uncles who had the same thing. fuck

1
ChristopherclesOP•

Same here, my dad was on it, and it was talk of a very small town.

2
kernpanic•

Yes - flicked through the channels last night - saw one of the moden quiz shows and said to my partner - what happened to sale of the century - reruns of that wpuld be better than the crap thats on now...

3
Omegaville•

Yeah I miss it. Network just found it too expensive to make.

Temptation tried hard (Ed Phillips as host) but relied too much on pop-culture TV Week style questions.

3
Supersnazz•

I remember watching it and the home viewer that was on the board was the ugliest fucking baby I'd ever seen. When they got to the photo Nicky Buckley started laughing, which set Glen Ridge into giggling fits too. I'm pretty surprised they aired it.

3
wangsupreme•

It was on every night in our house when I was a kid. When I was in Year 7, we sat down to watch one night and my school principal was one of the challengers.

He was fucking hopeless and barely got a question right. The next day I gave him shit about it, and he wasn't impressed. A few days later, the prick gave me Saturday morning detention because my desk tray was too messy.

Delvene is now in her 60s. Nicky Buckley and Alyce Platt are both in their 50s. Even Jo Bailey is pushing 50 and has a kid playing senior AFL footy. The march of time is a mother fucker.
