Workaround for accessing the course on Android, still functional as of 5/30 6:15 PM UTC
EDIT: SOMEHOW I LEFT "JAPANESE" OUT OF THE TITLE AND ONLY NOTICED JUST AS I CLICKED THE POST BUTTON. Oh god what have I done
I managed to get this working last night when switching between my old iPhone and my new Android phone, but today I found out you can use the desktop workaround to trigger it as well. You may not be able to access it every time and it might require some trial and error, but you too can test pre-release Japanese on Android! Yes, stuff is missing and probably will be until an app update. But hey, this is fun!
This method assumes that you've already accessed and made progress on either the iOS or web Japanese course.
- First, open the Android app to a language that's fully supported and go to the main page you select lessons from.
- On the desktop, navigate to the hacky Japanese page, I use the element inspector, can't imagine why the Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey scripts wouldn't work though. You just need to be on the main Japanese page on desktop.
- On your phone, slide the menu of the language you're looking at down far enough to trigger a refresh. This should bring up an error that Japanese isn't available on mobile, and present you a ton of choices that you absolutely don't want.
- Select one of the courses that isn't coming from English. This'll prompt another dialogue asking if you want to change your default language to that source language. Cancel out of this prompt as well.
- At this point, you should get a glimpse of the menu behind the error again before it pops up. If it's still loading, repeat step 4 a few times and it should pop. Once it does, the tricky part is scrolling and tapping the language before the error comes back. Again, you'll probably be selecting and canceling out of languages before you get into any of the lessons. But if you're persistent, and of course you are, you're reading this- you can get in.
If you load the app while your account is already last set to Japanese, you won't see anything behind the error screen, so if your problem is not being able to see the lessons to click to begin with, that might be your problem. There might be a whole lot of other problems accessing it. All I know is I've managed to reproduce this coming from both the iOS app and the desktop version back to Android.
Again, this is mostly just for fun- stuff is missing. Stuff that probably won't be there until an actual app update. Some text for forming sentences isn't voiced. If your primary concern is to get some learning done, this is not really going to help. If you want to take a peek at the course and are losing your mind that "1-2 weeks" is almost up, this can help with that though!
If anyone's having trouble I'll try my best to help you out. Can post screenshots on request if somehow I'm magical and I'm the only person this is working for. And if any of this is against the rules, mods, please delete the crap out of this post. Thanks, and have fun!
