Always One There Will Be

THEORY

I had this thought while reading a comment by u/thetheoryawakens.

This is just some fodder for discussion.

Who led Luke as a force ghost to the Last Jedi before? It was Obi Wan who sent Luke to Yoda for training. Now he is guiding someone, Rey, to the Last Jedi again.

That's absolutely correct. Yoda was the Last Jedi. And Luke was not a Jedi until after Yoda had died. Unlike the Sith, Jedi do not remain apprentices after earning the title of Master Jedi. While in training, they are Padawan Learners.

This makes me wonder if Luke's statement from the trailer, "the Jedi must end" may take on a little different meaning in full context. What if it's not about the ultimate elimination of the Jedi, but the rite of passage? Luke believes that the Force is now limiting the Jedi to a single master at any point of time. Yoda was the last. Yoda passed on his knowledge and Luke became the last. Luke tried to train new Jedi, but he believes the Force itself prevented them from becoming master Jedi. Now, along comes Rey - and Luke tells her that, for her to become a Jedi, the Jedi must end. He believes that he is facing his own death.

The Jedi is dead. Long love the Jedi.

Just some food for thought.
