New player told to wait till s11 to start

Im a new player and was thinking of trying diablo 3 now , havent played it since the first release and even then I didnt play alot, so im basically new. But ive been told to hold off until s11 starts since there is "no point" in playing now. Would stuff I do be for nothing if i buy the game now and play or whats the deal?
