Is it really true that you have to listen to music to the point where you can almost just barely make out details?

I've heard that you basically have to make your music volume as low as possible. As in, loud enough to hear what's going on and absolutely no louder than that.

As a teenager, this is kind of hard to believe because of how loud my peers all listen to headphones. Whenever somebody tries to show me a song or I'm next to someone listening to music, they're really blasting that shit. I often listen to music decently loud- at least, louder than it has to be- and it's kind of unbearable sometimes how loud people have their shit.

Do you really get tinnitus or similar hearing problems pretty easily if you're listening to music louder than it has to be? Or is it being overcareful? If it's the case it seems like the next generation might be doomed given how loud most seem to listen, so that's why I have a hard time believing it
