How well does aftermarket ink cartridges work for printing photos?

I have two printers; a Canon MX922 and a Canon Pro 9000 mark II. I see both of these printers have dirt-cheap ink from China. I've used this ink in a really old canon printer I had and it was great for just general document printing. How does it stand up for photo printing though? Also, I need a new print head for my pro 9000 mark II. Is there a good aftermarket print head, or do I really need to pay over $100 for a replacement?
