What is your opinion on car manufacturers turning to alternate forms of energy in the upcoming years?
So I was going to put this in the classic cars sub, but I wanted a broader range of opinions. Climate change and talks of alternate energy have been topping the pages of Reddit for months. The Paris Accord has been all over the media, and I just wanted to hear the opinions of some diehard automotive enthusiasts.
I love classic cars. I love gasoline burning big engines, big heavy metal chrome bumpers, and smog spewing loud unrestricted exhausts. I specifically love big 70s cars. With all of that said, you'd think I'd scoff at the idea of a changing automotive industry. The fact is I don't. There will always be petrol loving car people until the day we all die. I think the automotive industry may see a slight split. Gasoline will be for us classic car people, while the everyday commuter will use whatever future vehicles will run off of. I think that we will still see high performance factory cars that may still run off of gasoline engines, just to satisfy the driver's market. Imagine a Camaro or Mustang that was only electric? What's the fun in that?
I don't see alternate energy as a threat to our hobby. I see it as an opportunity to get some more freedom. If gasoline engine cars become a niche, we may be able to go "balls to the wall" without worrying about strict standards. I can see classic car people just having barrels or tanks of high octane gasoline in their own backyard as gas stations become a thing of the past. Who knows what the future may hold for us car people, but I know we'll always be here.
