I think I screwed myself

I started playing Skyrim for the first time and I've heard you can do anything you want. So when I escaped Helgen with Havard I thought it'd be funny to kill him. Little did I know that as a level 1 character I was not able to defeat him. So now everytime I go to Riverwood to try and continue the main story he just attacks me. Am I just screwed? The quest log has a failed sign on the mission. Can I just not progress the story now?
