[Weekly Discussion Thread] How do you build your card collection? - Submitted by Powelale000

Discussion

Hello everyone,

Happy June! We have a new Weekly Discussion Thread and this one was suggested and written up by our very own community member u/powelale000.

As most of us know, being a part of r/RandomActsofCards is super addicting. Receiving cards is a lot of fun, but even more fun for some of us is sending cards. There’s just something about that “stamp, send, smile” process that brings joy to the heart.

Unfortunately, sending cards can get quite expensive. As someone who has sent over 500 cards within the sub, I know how financially demanding the process can get. I realized over time though that cards can be found super cheap, and even stamps too. I’ve created a list of places to find cheaper cards and stamps and thought I would share with the group.

PLACES TO FIND CHEAPER CARDS:

  • Dollar stores – usually 6-8 cards for $1

  • Dollar spots in stores such as Michael's and Target – usually 6-8 cards for $1-$3

  • Amazon – prices varies, but there are tons of cute sets for cheap

  • Thrift shops – you’d be shocked at how many people donate cards! I usually get a pack of 10-50 random cards for $1-5

  • Garage sales – specifically sales that advertise crafting supplies. I usually get 10-30 random cards for $0.25-$5

THE BIG THREE PLACES TO FIND SUPER CHEAP CARDS:

  • Senior center sales

  • Church garage sales

  • Retirement community garage sales

  • Sending cards is something the older generation used to love to do! As a result, my best card-finding ventures have been at senior center sales, church garage sales, and retirement community sales.

I have never been to a sale at a senior center, church, or retirement community where I haven’t found cards. Generally, I will get 20-100 cards at sales like these for anywhere from under a dollar up to a max of $10. Of course, results will vary dependent on location.

PLACES TO FIND CHEAPER STAMPS:

  • EBay – I’ve found a ton of older stamps for 70-80% the cost of face value (that’s a 20-30% discount) on eBay. You can combine the older, smaller denomination stamps you get together to equal the going rate of a stamp. Search for terms like “bulk stamps” and “discount stamps.” Just be sure the stamps you’re purchasing are unused and not cancelled. The listing will tell you things like that.

  • Estate sales – it’s pretty common for older people to collect stamps, and oftentimes their collections are sold at estate sales.

I know I haven’t listed them all… What are you favorite places, online or in person, to find cheaper cards and stamps?

Thanks so much u/powelale000 for this great discussion! Just some last comments from the mods:

  • Don't forget to check out our instagram and pinterest

  • Feel free to add your birthday to our birthday calendar that's in our sidebar and see the results to send birthday wishes to others in the community.

  • You can always talk about things off topic as well. This place is a discussion for anything card related or not, but we always have themes to help guide discussion if needed. :)

  • Message the mods if you want to be featured for a WDT. We're always looking for more ways for the community to be involved. If you ever thought about a meta post or wanted to start a discussion then this is the place to do it. Message us to let us know what you'd like to talk about (it can be anything), if it sounds great we'll ask you to write up the post and then we'll feature it in an upcoming WDT thread.

Happy card giving and thanks for being a part of the community,

~Lehmongeloh and the mod team
