My first major battle oh my god

My fortress is prospering. My dwarves pull gold from the earth and craft it to trade for other metals that we lack, like iron and steel. With this newfound wealth I begin to slowly build up a proper military, and despite my lack of major water sources I have developed a plan to have an indoor well manually filled by bucket-toting dwarves. Life is good.

Suddenly, a force of goblins arrives at the edge of the map, more than I've ever had to deal with before! The previous incursions were all only a few- in this one, there was a hundred. http://imgur.com/a/bCvr0

I pale. My military, which I was so proud of before, now seemed horribly inadequate. It was also at this moment that I realized my hallway pit trap wasn't actually working- I'd forgotten to link the lever! No matter, I decided. I'll raise the outer drawbridge and let my marksdwarves pick them off.

However, my marksdwarves, instead of going into the archer tower and patrolling around inside of it like I thought they would, instead leapt out of the fortress and engaged the goblins in hand to hand combat. Then, I spotted a goblin in my animal products stockpile- there was a hole in the ground above my stockpile I had never noticed, and goblins and trolls were streaming in from the hole!

I threw my dwarves into battle, and they methodically chopped through the tiny bottleneck that the goblins were entering through. My axelord mused on an argument he'd had earlier while he calmly beat a goblin hammerman to death with his axe http://imgur.com/Ku7dsc7. After my military got distracted collecting all the fallen loot, I disabled their hauling and sent them to slaughter the goblins outside. My marksdwarves were almost completely wiped out at this point, and as my dwarves fell I began to lose hope that I would survive this siege.

Suddenly, the goblins fled! Though I'd only killed around a dozen or so, it appears my mad last stand had been enough to intimidate them into fleeing, at least for now. I've suffered heavy casualties, and my entire herd of livestock has been methodically slaughtered. It has been tough... but I survived.

I feel like now I can really appreciate the gory wonder of dwarf fortress. My baptism of blood and fire is complete!
