Recommended home server web interface?

I've been using XPEnology on my home server for some time, since I do not tinker with it that much (it is mainly to download my favourite shows, store them, and stream/transcode them).

Configuration is:

  • MSI B250I PRO (not the gaming version)
  • Intel Pentium G4560
  • 4 1TB HDDs (intended to be in a single RAID0 array, for non-important data storage (i.e. the downloaded stuff)
  • 1x PM961 Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD, 256GB, for storing installed software, Docker images, etc.
  • Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 M.2 Wireless card

However only after installing a 256GB NVMe SSD inside did I notice that Synology's DSM does not support NVMe M.2 SSDs yet. I can't get it to work, at all.

So I decided to make a "tinkering" server. Since I already had some issues with XPEnology (it not recognizing my WiFi card, etc.), it was an easy decision.

What wasn't easy was the choice of OS. Unfortunately not many distros are targeting simple home users who don't want to fiddle with ZFS or BTRFS, or get into some complicated volume set up (talking about you, FreeNAS!). I wanted to stick with Linux, as I dislike BSD. Even with Linux, I prefer the Debian/Ubuntu line, but that wasn't a must.

So the last options on the table were OpenMediaVault, Rockstor, or a custom OS build. OMV wouldn't install since I went UEFI-only, and Debian 8.x does not support my ethernet controller (Realtek RTL8111H) with DKMS package. Same with Rockstor, it wouldn't boot.

So my hardware also ruled out Debian, which would've only been usable if I could've gotten OMV to work. But it won't budge, and OMV 4.x is far away still.

And such for now I'm sticking with Ubuntu 17.04, which finally supports my network from out of the box. I chose to use the mini ISO, making it a small install, with only the most necessary packages (OpenSSH server, SAMBA, Docker). All's fine, except one thing. I don't know what to use for remote controlling. I don't want to expose SSH, I just want a simple web interface, similar to Synology's. I was a fan of Ajenti back during v1.x, and I've tried installing 2.x, but for some reason it won't answer on the port, it just loads infinitely.

So I'm looking for an alternative. Something that is as expandable as Ajenti, with plugins, etc., so I can enable only the features I want. I thought about webmin, but it's very... Simplistic in approach. I don't want something I need to configure hours end, I want something that just works (the only time you'll hear me quoting Steve Jobs).

Unfortunately this segment of the market, just like NAS-oriented simple distros, is not very saturated. Most of these control panels are meant for web hosting, something I'm not intending to do. All I want is remote supervision of my server, with some statistics maybe, and the ability to make some minimal changes, e.g. install packages, reboot, check logs, manage hard disk volumes and mounts, et cetera.

What are my options, above of the obvious (cPanel, ZPanel, Webmin, Froxlor and Plesk)?
