AMEX Giftcard Fraud

I received a $150 AMEX giftcard last year as a wedding present. I went to use the card last week on Amazon and it was denied. Today I checked to see if I had to activate it or anything, and on the AMEX site it said that there were about a dozen transactions on the card in California (I live in IL) , and it had been drained to $0. The card had never left my possession and I only recently opened it. I called AMEX and they said there was nothing they could do to help me and refused to issue me a new card or reverse the transactions.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there anything I can do besides not buying AMEX cards again? I filed a complaint with the Consumer Finance bureau but not optimistic.
