Small fish with $1500 to spare. All on ETH or altcoins?

I was thinking of $1k on ETH and then just playing around with the 500 on altcoins but the amount of money im putting in is so small i dont know if its worth it. Should I just put it all on ETH or should i follow my plan but go for some altcoins that would be gambles? There's a lot to read up on and its hard to know if its even worth my while.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
