Spoilers: Rant #498 about Claire and Frank's arc this season
Now I know almost everyone and their mother have already made a thread about this, so let me just say, I don't really mind Claire becoming president necessarily, but yeah like everyone's mentioned the way it was done was kinda just like "Yeah she's here now"... wait what? Like, throughout the season, I think almost every episode had someone saying "Claire should be president, not Frank," and given that fact I assumed it was a red-herring. Maybe leading to something cool like some kind of dictatorial diarchy (Especially considering how both terms Madam and Mr President started being regularly used at the same time). But no, was it meant to be foreshadowing? Because there is a difference between foreshadowing and just straight up spoiling your own show.
Second, this new Frank vs. Claire feud is just frustrating. It has already happened, and while for me personally it wasn't the most enjoyable thing to watch, I think it was ultimately good because it firmly reestablished them as equals, which was then (seemingly) solidified in the final scene of season 4 when she looked at us with Frank. Now they're equals and they are in danger of losing everything, so they are not fucking around... But now all that development is out the window. They're back to being rivals.
Now, if the writers wanted it to always end as a rivalry between two power-hungry psychopaths who are so similar that they're incompatible, then that would've been cool if developed well... but don't go back and forth with them being enemies to being stronger than ever to then being enemies again, because it makes the strong resolution of season 4 pointless.
It seems like the writers are just coming up with the storylines season by season, which kinda just makes it this messy overall narrative rather than a progressive development. I love the show obviously, don't get me wrong. And there was definitely some really cool things this season, but I just wish the writers would be a little more coherent.
