First timer, need help with binding

I'm just getting into this hobby, so things are still a bit foreign to me. I have a Turnigy 9XR Pro with this module and I'm trying to bind to the Blade 180QX.

What's going on:

1. Plug in the 180QX. Blue light comes on and then off. After a few seconds i get a rapid blue flash.
2. Hold bind while turning on the transmitter.
3. I hear three beeps, release the button, and a few seconds later, I hear one long beep.
4. The bird's light goes to solid
5. the module's light is blinking red
6. Throttle has no effect, even though it's happened a couple times that the blades spin for a split second

The module's manual says one long beep after the first three indicates a failed bind, however the quadcopter's manual says a solid light indicates a successful bind.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help.

edit OK, now I just tried again, except i held the bind button for another second or so and I get another three beeps. After a few seconds, the bird turns to a solid light again, and the transmitter is no longer blinking. It doesn't seem to get any power, but the blades have sputtered a few times.

edit2 I was able to get this working by turning DSM2 to Auto mode, in my case switch 3 and switch my channel order to TEAR. With this, i had my first response from input. Then my aileron and rutter were reversed, so I learned you definitely want to turn the quad off before changing those settings. Finally, I had to set 100% left trim aileron trim (is that normal?)
