Question regarding list building

Hey everybody! I've been playing wargames for a very long time, but I'm brand new to bolt action. I'm playing Americans. I bought the rule book first and one of the unit entries there is for a Veteran infantry squad that can get up to 5 SMGs. I liked the idea of having an assaulty close-range unit for objective grabbing, however, when I purchased the US army book, there is no option for this squad. The army book says "This fuller and more detailed listing both augments and supersedes the shorter army list included in the Bolt Action rulebook." I'm a little confused by the wording. Can I still use that veteran squad from the rulebook in addition to squads from the supplement? Or do I have to use only squads from the supplement?
